Watching digital movies

Hi,
I've been using VLC for qute some time now and i'm starting to play nore and more digital movie sound tracks now. I've noticed when i use other media players and the movie has a digital sound track my amplifier recognises it and chooses the correct digital format via the media software but when i use the VLC player it remains on Pro logic/Dolby surround. I've tried changing the settings in the audio section without success. Could someone please guide me in the right direction and show me where i'm going wrong as i'd much rather use VLC than the windows media payer.
