DVD Selective Subtitles Not Showing

Postby BlueDragonX » 16 Aug 2010 03:44

Same problem as here:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=70169

But the problem was not addressed, and with the latest VLC version I thought I'd bring it back up.

Synopsis: When playing an English-language DVD during which certain characters speak a language other than English, the subtitles are not shown for that character's speech. There is no subtitle track available which only shows the non-English speech. You either get subtitles for all speech on the DVD or none at all.

Case in point: Star Wars: Episode 1. When any alien being speaks, subtitles are not displayed. Obviously you need subtitles - it's unrealistic to expect anybody to understand the language they speak on Tatooine - but I don't need text at the bottome of my screen when Anakin's whining about pod racing, or Palpatine's threatening minions, I can understand that just fine, and it kind of ruins the movie experience.

So what's the deal? How do we fix this? Or is this some bug that's still not been worked out?
