installing 1.1.2 does not work ?!

hi - - - i've been an user of vlc for years
BUT
- i had vlc 1.0.5
- program update worked not (from the menu)
- so i downloaded the new version from the vlc main page
- desinstallation AND installation did not work !
- ok, i found another file on the site : vlc-1.1.2-win32.7z
- installation worked BUT
- with this version i could ONLY open a file, NOT a folder !

it makes a lot today, sigh, and i came back to 1.0.5

any help ?! thanks in advance - - -
