Problems Playing DTS Audio CD

Postby Sam » 04 Apr 2005 22:58

Hi All,
I'm trying to play a dts audio CD using VLC (Windows) through the SPDIF output of my Soundblaster Audigy into my Denon AVR1705.
When I press the play button all i hear is a little crackle then silence, the display on the amp says dts but the dts LED is all flickery.
I get a similar problem trying to play a dts audio cd using PowerDVD... However, if i play a DVD with dts soundtrack all works fine. 'DTS' comes up on the display of the Denon and the dts LED lights up solidly; so the hardware is definately capable!

Here's a section of the messages:

Code: Select all

... dts: DTS channels:6 samplerate:44100 bitrate:1411200 main debug: control type=1 main debug: looking for audio output module main debug: probing 3 candidates aout_directx debug: OpenAudio aout_directx debug: device supports 5.1 channels aout_directx debug: device supports 4 channels aout_directx debug: device supports 2 channels aout_directx debug: device supports 1 channel aout_directx debug: device supports A/52 over S/PDIF aout_directx debug: creating DirectSoundThread main debug: thread 3200 (DirectSound Notification Thread) created at priority 15 (directx.c:357) aout_directx debug: DirectSoundThread ready main debug: using audio output module "aout_directx" main debug: output 'spdi' 44100 Hz 3F2R/LFE frame=1536 samples/6144 bytes main debug: mixer 'spdi' 44100 Hz 3F2R/LFE frame=1536 samples/6144 bytes main debug: filter(s) 'dts '->'spdi' 44100 Hz->44100 Hz 3F2R/LFE->3F2R/LFE main debug: looking for audio filter module main debug: probing 23 candidates main debug: using audio filter module "dtstospdif" main debug: found a filter for the whole conversion main debug: looking for audio mixer module main debug: probing 3 candidates main debug: using audio mixer module "spdif_mixer" main debug: input 'dts ' 44100 Hz 3F2R/LFE frame=1024 samples/4096 bytes main debug: no need for any filter main debug: audio output is too slow (2536030), trashing 69660us main debug: audio output is too slow (2466386), trashing 69660us main debug: audio output is too slow (2396734), trashing 69660us main debug: audio output is too slow (2327082), trashing 69659us main debug: audio output is too slow (2257429), trashing 69660us main debug: audio output is too slow (2187777), trashing 69660us main debug: audio output is too slow (2118124), trashing 69660us main debug: audio output is too slow (2048471), trashing 69660us
... and it goes on trashing the data until i hit stop.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
(I can't wait to listen to 'dark side of the moon' in dts!!)

Cheers,
Sam.

Hi !
Bad news but you can't listen your DTS Audio cd with your SBLive!
The fact is that there is a problem with the quartz of the audio card, it can only work at 48 KHz with DTS and not 44,1 KHz like your CD request even SPDIF so only two solutions :

Buy a compatible soundcard like M-Audio and few others (try google search)
Play the DTS audio CD in a DVD Player

I had the same problem 4 months ago and never find a solution except the two above.

P.S: sorry for my bad english :o

For my denon, and my cheap ass soundcard, it is possible to work around this by slightly speeding up playback. This causes a small pitch-up, but works otherwise. I have no plan to implement that workaround in vlc though.

Also, I suspect there are one or more bugs somewhere in how vlc handles dts over spdif. I have searched, and done some trial and error, but never managed to find the source.
