How to convert avchd to mov from Sony Cybershot HX5V

I have a number of clips got from my Sony Cybershot HX5V which are AVCHD(.mts) files. And i tried to send one of my friends who has a Mac, but she could not open the files.So i wanna to convert the mts files to MOV and resend them to my friend.My friend will do some editing on the videos, so i want to choose a video converter which will produce the video file with the least loss of original files.
Please give me some advice.thanks.
