VLC and incmpatibility with Real Player and FLV

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

VLC and incmpatibility with Real Player and FLV

Postby jagman55 » 23 May 2010 06:35

I would have swore the copy of VLC I used before my recent troubles with VLC. it played FLV files.

Had to find another copy and reload but all the copies I tried, this site and others will not play fLV, i get an error or "VLC had ended do you want to send an error report which happens about 90% of every time I start VLC 1.05. I have uninstalled many times cleaned the registry, etc, deleted the folders after doing a search for "VLC" and still nothing but errors.

One thing I did change was to install REALPLAYER but can not find on Google any compatibility issues.

One of the other alarming things, is regardless of what I do, i can not find where VLC FREE .8 copies lives with many searches of my C:\ (boot) drive. When I uninstall VLC 1.05, the content on the file manager stills shows a VLC and if you click it, it is the old .8 version and when i load VLC 1.05, there are TWO versions of VLC on the content popup.

I really don't want to go to Real Player but, will have to since I am at my wits end trying to get VLC to work.

The copy i was looking for was the one that let you FIX the size of the screen window and it would restore to that size as the ones prior to 1.05 did not and that was the most aggraveing feature of VLC.

Help please for tips on:
1. removing the old VLC free .8 copy completely
2. where to find a copy of a version of VLC that will work with Real player OR will handle FLV files.
3. process of removing old programs and re-installing a new copy of VLC as the way I do it of using Windows is not working for VLC .8.

Thanks

1. Delete %appdata%/vlc folder
2. Delete Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC folder
3. Try VLC 1.1.0-rc build

1. You could try using Revo Uninstaller http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/f ... ption.html or defrag for hard drive. If they don't work then I would do a factory image restore and bring for computer back to when you first got it. But COPY all your pictures, videos and music etc on to external drive first cause every thing that was not on your hard drive after you bought it will be gone.

2. if you want to play FLV files then get cccp "The Combined Community Codec Pack is a simple playback pack for Windows with the goal of supporting the majority of video formats in use today." http://www.cccp-project.net/ after getting cccp even windows media player will play FLV files.

3. I'm not sure what you mean but do you mean if they is an update for a program. You don't have to remove and then re-install to get the update.
