Cannot play mlaw wav file (from Vonage voicemail) n 0.8.5

I have phone messages emailed to me by Vonage. These are in a .wav file that plays OK with Real Player, Windows Media Player, or Quicktime (on the Mac). They are 64 Kbps mono mlaw wav files.

I have VLC on a Windows machine (v 0.8.5), several Macs, and a couple of Linux machines.

On at least the Windows (and as I recall also the Mac) machines, when I try to play these files they don't play, and in the Messages window I get this message:

wav error: unsupported codec (mlaw)

However, it says that WAV files are supported on the site.

And searching the Trac system it seems that mlaw/ulaw are at least mentioned in the sources.

I have tried resetting the Preferences and restarting; it didn't seem to help.

What can I do about this?

More info: I downloaded the latest nightly for Windows (20060909-0000) and when I launch it by doubleclicking on the wav file in WIndows explorer it actually plays. So apparently this is something that got fixed after 0.8.5.

Should this have worked in 0.8.5?

There were some changes in audio since VLC 0.8.5.
If it does work in trunk, then it will be perfect in next release :p

Why do people answer a voicemail message while the person is still composing the voicemail message? If you don't want to answer the phone, just let the voicemail message be composed. If you don't want to talk to the person, DON'T interrupt the person while the voicemail is being composed!
