identify codec being used

Is there a way to tell which codec the player is using to play the .mpg file?

for .mpg VLC always uses the libmpeg2 decoder. this one decodes both mpeg1 and mpeg2 video.
audio is usually mpeg or ac3. you can check this in the messages window if you really care.

If you thought about codec packs in windows, vlc doesn't use any of them

well, i can play all of my video files except 3, and I can play them with VLC. I have Divx and Xvid, as well as Ogg, ogm, and ac3 codecs. They couldnt play the 3 files.
So, I wanted to know if VLS could identify the codec teh file is encoded in, so I could download it and play the files in media player as well.
