Stream "What You Hear"

I have searched the forum for topics such as "what you hear", "stream PC sound" and "stream PC speakers" but could not find what I wanted.

I have an internet radio box in another room to the PC. This connects via wi-fi to the net.

However loads of radio stations now do not have easliy accesible streams and a lot of sporting organisations such as MLB and NFL make it almost impossible to find the link. I would be happy to pay for these services but it is more convienient if I can listen to them on my radio rather than sit at the PC.

So basically I want to start playing the stream through my PC but then have VLC send the audio to the radio. I tried to set up a stream using the "Stereo Mix" selection but I cannot get it going as VLC always wants me to insert the location of the file I want to play!

Any way around this?

You need an FM transmitter if you want to send audio to a nearby radio receiver. If you have one, you just need to configure VLC to use the FM TX as the output sound card.

Anyway, yes it should be possible, if you have a stereo mix output option on your soundcard then you should be able to stream from it. If your on windows use: Media --> Streaming... --> Swap to "Capture Device" tab and select your stereo mix from there

I have tried but it keeps sending me back to the "File Selection" dialog. It wants me to specify the files to play rather than just streaming the PC output.

First, you cannot stream what comes out of the PC speakers. You either need to tell the other software to output its audio somewhere VLC can get it (not the speakers), or you need to loop the line-out with the line-in and tell VLC to open the line-in (analog hole).

Second, you need a medium to carry data from VLC to the radio. But for a plain radio receiver, I fail to see an alternative to a low-power FM TX.

I have Jamcast but I always prefer to have a backup in case one program does not work. VLC would obviously not work the way I want it.

Jamcast allows me to stream to my radio by inputting "http://<IP ADDRESS>:58641/Media/audio/mpeg/CaptureStream" into the radio's station listing.
