Help please. My VCL wont play 4 of my .avi

OK so my friend gave me make it or break it recently, and 4 of the episodes wont work. I used to use windows media player but for the last 4 episodes it said i needed a codec, so i asked my friend to help me n she said download VCL it'll play it without the codec, so i did and those episodes still wont work
they are .avi files and when i play them on VCL it says its playing (cuz u can see the pause button not the play button) but the bar dosnt move, neither does the time even load. Like the other episodes it'll be like 10.45/41.98 but for the 4 episodes it just has 00.00/00.00
and i dunno what to do. i really wanna watch these episodes so can u please tell me if the problem is with the actual file or if its with the VCL please =]

The files are probably corrupt.
