DD or DTS through spdif

Postby Kador » 12 Jan 2004 09:51

Hello,

I'm using 0.7 on XP.

My computer uses a Terratec 6Fire 24/96, whose SPDIF is connected to a decoder/amplifier. When playing dvds or AC3 streams (into AVI or whatever) I check SPDIF output, and select 5.1 in the audio parameters, but only 2-channels PCM gets through.

Of course it works perfectly with other programs.

thx for helping

Hmmm, I don't understand this part. You should either be able to select S/PDIF or 5.1 but not both at the same time (btw 5.1 is analog 5.1 output).

SPDIF is selected in my default settings (since I only use spdif as an output), and when I play an AC3 or DTS content, I tried selecting every option in the audio setting, all of them seem to generate a PCM output.

Didn't know 5.1 means in VLC "5.1 analog", this association is not intuitive at all : DD/AC3 are 5.1 formats, and they are digital ...

When I said "Analog", I meant that it goes to the 5.1 speakers output of your soundcard, not to the S/PDIF output.

Apparently VLC doesn't recognize your card as capable of outputting S/PDIF otherwise you would have an option in the audio output menu for "S/PDIF" (along with "Stereo", "5.1", etc...).

I'm not sure why this is happening though. It would seem that your card doesn't respect the convention of using the WAVE_FORMAT_DOLBY_AC3_SPDIF output format for S/PDIF output but would rather just use the normal WAVE_FORMAT_PCM format and force the AC3 data into it.

Anybody has an idea about this ?

I will transmit this to the vendor support, they might find a solution.

Thanx for you answers anyway.

I got an answer from TERRATEC :

"If VLC uses only the Kernel Mixer, this should be normal, as this soundcard can only be controlled through the control panel"

original french text :

"j'ai relu le forum, mais en vain. Je ne suis pas plus avancé... Si le VLC
fonctionne seulement avec le Kernel Mixer (mélangeur Windows) c'Est possible que ce soit la cause du problème. La DMX 6fire ne peut être controllée complètement que par le Control panel."

Your opinion ?
