video lan client 0.8.1 memory leak?

Postby dmastro » 24 Feb 2005 21:02

hi, has anyone seen a consistent memory leak with the vlc version 0.8.1 when receiving streams (as a client). I have several test boxes in an igmp/pim network that i am testing with and all of them are consistently leaking memory from at least one of the vlc.exe processes. Many of the clients are running multiple and discrete multicast streams, but usually only one is leaking (as shown in the task manager). This is on windows 2k and XP boxes.

When running as a server to stream the media, i do not see the leak.

When i had been using an older version 0.7.1, i did not see these client side leaks.

If this is a known issue can someone point me to a patch, if there is one?

The network is under stress and i need to run these clients for extended periods of time, so the memory leaks on the client side are disrupting the testing process.

thx

I suspect I may have encountered this too. I was recording some video streams on my Windows XP box, and the machine would always get really sluggish and then lock up after several hours.

FWIW, it doesn't seem to have a memory leak on Fedora Core 3. I ran 2 instances for 15 hours straight. Although, on FC3 I didn't have it play locally, while on WinXP I did, so that might have something to do with it.

Hey,
Which video_output module are you using ?
Could you test with a different one ?

Hi i am using the default and it is consistently leaking on windows 2000 servers and windows xp boxes. When the stream is stopped the memory is restored. I had a single vlc.exe eating up around 200megs. Stopped the stream and it dropped to 14megs.

Do you have any suggestions for a particular video_output module to use. I am suprised that there are not many people seeing this. Are most of the clients being installed on linux boxes?

I switched to a different module (directx). I will let you know if i find one that does not leak.

I can see that the direct x module is leaking as well.

I could not find one that does not leak. The leak starts about 45 second into the stream. I can increase the virtual memory on the system, but that is not correcting the problem of the vlc process eroding large amounts of memory on the clients.

The dummy video output which does not actually display the stream(but the stream does come in), also leaks as well. So i think it is something other than the display mod in the vlc process that is leaking.
