Where do I start?

I'm starting from the beginning - so I need some initial hand-holding.

We're running a Simple Machines based forum and would like to add vlc player to our server for pop-up use. We'll put buttons in Main nav bar and on profile and Gallery pages.

Player will draw on user-recorded and submitted audio files in a single directory. No streaming, and no BMI/ASCAP issues allowed.

Server is Linux - Redhat Fedora Core 7.

So much information and use options here, I don't even know how to word a search.

So can you please just direct me to where this may have already been discussed?
