Convert mp4 to avi

Postby KshitijPeter » 01 Jan 2010 10:41

Hi,
I have an LG divX LCD TV, which plays only .avi files - via the USB port.

I have some mp4 movies/vidoes. If I use the VLC player with various combination(encapsulation, conversion, frame-rate etc) , I am able to generate .avi and .mp3 files. These play fine with VLC files. But when I transfer to USB drive to play with my LG LCD TV, they are shown as unrecognised files.

What is the exact codec encapsulation, audio/video codec, that I need to use?

(sorry searched all over but not able to find a solution).

I'm in the same boat -- I have a bunch of mp4s that I'd like to watch through my Samsung DVD player (using a usb key). But the Samsung device only plays AVI containers.

I tried to use the transcoding in VLC (I'm on a Mac), but nothing I seemed to be able to do with the wizard would get me an AVI container on the output.

The instructions for transcoding on the VLC wiki don't cover the mp4 to AVI case and, in any case, seem outdated. They talk about using a clivlc tool on the Mac, which does not exist in the latest VLC download for mac.

I'm not sure VLC is the best and easiest tool to use for doing such conversions. You'd better give a try at AviDemux and also check the limitations of the destination device about max resolution and max supported B-frames.
