open with VLC media player

So I right click a video and scroll down to open with, and select open with VLC media player but nothing happens. VLC doesn't open or anything. What's going on?

please let me know if you figure it out i'm having the same problem. If I open a file seperately by opening first vlc then it will play but if I go through my computer for example and right click it wont play even if the file is already associated, by the normal doubleclicking.Im using windows vista but it used to work this way before

i figured it out i went to help and checked for updates in the vlc program downloaded that to my desktop when finished i installed it doing so i had to uninstall the old vlc and when installing the new one i chose to add a newfolder insted of trying to use the existing folders for vlc cause the programs were uninstalled but the folders were still there so when i did this everything seemed to be back to normal.just remove the old desktop icon wherever it is and drag the new one that pops up to its place unless you have it on your desktop then just use the new but still remove the old one.when i first downloaded the update i couldnt find it so thats why i chose to redowload it to my desktop

Ok so that's not happening anymore since i restarted my computer. So I'm not sure what to tell you.
