VLC Media Player crash

I am under Windows XP SP3. For some undetermined reason my VLC 1.0.0 crashed yesterday. Any attempt to use it anymore prompted a window "VLC just crashed. Want to send a crash report ?".
I desinstalled VLC with CCleaner, cleaned the register with CCleaner, reboot the PC and, only then, downloaded and installed v1.0.3.
At first attempt to use it, I got the same prompt "VLC just crashed. Send a crash report ?". That, I can't understand : after desinstallation of 1.0.0, register cleaning and reboot, my PC should not even KNOW that I previously had VLC installed and it should just work fine with the newly installed, uo-to-date v1.0.3 ... but it doesn't !
Any suggestion would be most welcomed !

To j-b : Clearing the %apps\vlc file didn' solve my problem.

After having desinstalleed 1.0.3, I re-installed the older vlc-0.8.6h-win32. This time, the crash was documented :

Now, my first problem is that I do not know which key in the register I should modify (and how?) to allow JIT.
My second problem is that, even after having got JIT enabled, as I am not an expert, I wont be able to debug in C++.

Please let me know of any suggestion to get VLC back to work.

Problem resolved !
I discovered that, when reading DVDs without Menus, one is supposed, in the disk selection, to tick not only DVD but also DVD (no Menus). Having used, so far, only DVDs WITH menus, I had missed that very simple point.
As far as the indications received when VLC was crashing :
Crash alarm window : Assertion failed, Visual C++ Runtime Library debug required
Apps "Events obs" : failure in msvcrt.dll v7.0.2600.5512, at address so and so
... all wrong, wrong, wrong !
Lesson learnt : this type of "assistance" can be totally misleading and should be considered very cautiously. It made me loose hours !

Thanks for posting your solution ... helped me with a Xmas DVD from a friend that I had given up on ... worked fine on the DVD player in the living room but crashed VLC on my PC.

A program "crash" seems like a harsh way to trap this minor operator error, no hint that it was just a checkbox selection error ... is there a way to perhaps put a request on the development backlog list for an error message?

The assertion is inside libdvdnav, not VLC. If you have a problem with that, you should rather contact the dvdnav people.

Well, I guess thanks for the response ... I do hope you are having a better day today. I have no idea who the dvdnav people are or where they might reside. My concern was that VLC crashed, not dvdnav, for what seems like a small error. VLC is such an outstanding program I think it is unfortunate for such minor errors to sully its interface and reputation.

VLC is about 400,000 lines of code. An entire VLC build is made of around 2 millions lines of code. In other words, 80% of the shipped code is coming from other projects.

We hardly have the time to maintain our 20%. There is no way in hell we could fix the 80% foreign code.

I hit this problem - in VLC selected 'play DVD', and it just didn't play, just ended, and on restarting told me it had crashed...

From my perspective this is VLC just not working - does not pass go, what I would categorise as a Sev 1 problem - that has been categorised as 'won't fix'.

No, I'm not going to pursue this with anyone whose code may have been incorporated (even if I knew who/what), I'm just getting rid of VLC and using something which does work.

Say you're an electrician. Say a customer has his washing machine broken. Say that he complains to you since the washing machine uses electricity. Are you going to fix the problem?

VLC is electricty, libdvdnav is the washing machine.

It's not a matter of taking the bug seriously. It's a matter of being the competent person to deal with it, and having the means to investigate it. We are probably not the right contact, so it's unlikely we can solve the problem ourselves. Also, we do not have any of the DVD causing the problem, so we cannot investigate the bug anyway.

If I was the electrician who had supplied and fitted the washing machine, yes, I would fix the problem - or seen to it that a washing machine engineer was doing so.

But , no, your analogy is wrong, VLC is the washing machine (it's what I'm trying use), and libdvdnav the electricity (that VLC/washing machine is using). If I was the customer, I'd have called the washing machine fixer - and if the problem is that it doesn't have any electricity, then he needs to get the electrician to do whatever - and until then the washing machine isn't fixed.

Even if it were that way, you're still missing the point. First we cannot get to your house to figure what the problem is. Second we are not paid, so it is only fair that we try to minimize our share of the effort.

Which I have resolved by getting rid of VLC.

Because that, and not dvdnav, is what I tried to use.

VLC is broken. End of story.

Or you could have tried to use dvdsimple:// in vlc to use dvdread directly.

I just cannot believe the attitude of Rémi Denis-Courmont, its obvious the player is broke as so many people have the same problem but he just keeps on passing the buck. Its a ignorant and arrogant attitude to take. Ignoring the problem wont make it go away.
