Buffer/Cache Management

Postby Bannet » 27 Dec 2009 02:40

Hello!

I have some doubt about the cache management of vlan ...
I'm trying to watch a long video (movie) on Internet.
My connection speed is lower than the bit-rate of the video that I'm going to watch.
In the settings of vlc you can set the cache in ms ... for example I've set 30 000ms (30 sec).
But every time I try to watch the movie it start to get the cache, after 30 secs starts to play but it stop after about 2 minutes. This means that if the average bit-rate of the video is 800kbps, the received data is about 600kbps. If the movies length is 90min, It need at least 20/25 mins of buffering to play the entire movie!
My questions is: there is an option that allow me to set an unlimited cache and let me choose when play the film?
The best way should be something that can read the length of the movie, the bit-rate of the output streaming and the speed of the incoming data and calculate how much it need to get enough buffer to play the whole video without interruptions... (like youtube)

Thank you!
