Someone has figured out how to transcode to mp4v and got it to work, but the settings aren't ideal (320x240 video with 768 bitrate). Also, IMO h.264 is nicer than mp4 video (esp. when scaling resolution up).
According to Apple, the iPhone supports 640 x 480 h.264 video at 1500kbps... something like that... so using the vlc wizard to create an iPhone bound 480 wide x (360, 270, whathaveyou) in h.264 1024kbps with an mp4 wrapper should work... it works in QuickTime, works in iTunes... but message appears when you try to sync it to iPhone ("video will not work with iPhone" or something).
So...
REQ (&TIA):
(1) I'd like to see some successes and howtos on using vlc to encode specifically for iPhone, in varying degrees of quality encode options, right up to the envelope and beyond in h.264/ACC mp4's... (and whats this buzz about transcoding "profiles"?),
(2) Also, it just occurred to me that vlc can probably stream anything in one's video collection of varying codecies, formats, wrappers, right to the iPhone, so no need to encode and sync videos to the iPhone to begin with... ! Howtos on streaming with vlc to iphone would be keen (when you hit a streaming video at apple.com with iPhone, Safari gives up the full screen to [?QuickTime Player to] display the surprisingly high quality streaming video... this is what I'm after, not the YouTube lower quality stuff).
(3) An entire curriculum at major universities that teaches advanced vlc skills. (I want to see some certs for this amazing piece of software.... imagine... a Genuine VLC Streaming Operator, or a Certified VLC Transcoding Engineer, and the like
