Newbie with general question about DVD ripping

Hi - I just downloaded VLC for the purpose of ripping my dvd's to my computer for backup as well as use on my itunes/ipod. I just ran my first test converting a few minutes of a DVD to a .ps file on my desktop.... I tried to save two ways - once as H264 +AAC and also as DIV3 + MP3. When i played either version in vlc, the video was pixalted and choppy. Any suggetions? Or could someone point me to a resource online that might help me easily get started? I assume its my lack of knowledge on using the tool.....
