VLC output through HDMI to 1920*1080 LCD Screen

Postby Davekt » 07 Nov 2009 22:24

A long term user of VLC, since my main computer screen became my large LCD TV which I feed via HDMI, I have been disappointed by the cruder more jagged representation of video played by VLC, through HDMI. On my other computer the same files displayed perfectly via a 15 pin RGB lead to a 1920*1200 monitor.
Determined to get to the bottom of it - normal computer outputted screens being excellent - I loaded up the latest version of VLC and went to town on the settings.
Eventually I found it. Under VIDEO (Show Settings All) second page - Window Properties were the offending two settings - Video Width and Video Height. On my RGB monitor the default -1 settings for both these elements which is supposed to identify the optimal setting to produce the perfect picture does so, but for what ever reason this is not the case through the HDMI leads, hence the much poorer screen rendering. Simply putting in 1920 and 1080 to force the actual pixel resolution of the screen brought back the perfect picture.
Having googled for such a solution with no positive result, I thought if I entered it here anyone else who thinks they may be suffering from the same problem can try it.
Sorry if this is a well known problem and solution, I couldn't find it as I said in a Google search, which hopefully other non technophobes like me now can.
