No video, broken sound (VCL 1.0.2)

Postby Usher » 10 Oct 2009 16:54

Hi to everybody.

First a comment to the forum admins: I’m not sure if this is a general issue or a known windows related problem. So if necessary, please transfer this posting to the right forum. Thanks.

The problem: VCL 1.0.2 is unable to play some (more or less new) DVDs like '10’000 BC' or 'Cloverfield'. The files are stored as *.vob files. The video signal is not existent or extremely disturbed with very big wrong coloured pixel blocks. The audio signal is fragmented in parts with sound and silent parts.

That problem is not caused by a slow machine: The Intel extreme I7, 3.2 GHz, 12 GB Ram, NVidia 9800 GT sleeps with some about 2 or 3 percent of its possible computing power. The OS is ms windows xp sp 3 with all actual security downloads.

Other DVD players (like the good old PowerDVD 6 from 2004!) play these DVDs even on a much older xp machine without any problems.

With most other DVDs there are no problems: vcl plays them correctly.

Could anyone help?

Eventually my question is studip, but: The file 'VTS_01_1.VOB' in the DVD '10’000' BC' is 95.3 MByte (99'940'352 Bytes) large ... what do you mean with 'a sample'? Do you need a part of the file? Which part?

Does the problem still occur if you're playing this VOB with VLC ?

If so you can either upload the whole file to some file sharing site (like Rapidshare or Megaupload) or cut a shorter sample (use DGsplit and read here how to do it) and upload it as well.

No. The problem 'disappeared' ... it does not occur ... at the moment. ? !

In detail: VCL didn't work properly on the new computer and there was another program I couldn't even install! And I know that both programs have done their job fine under windows xp on the old machine. So I decided to try the big thing: reinstall the whole system.

But with one difference: The first time I installed windows on that new machine, updated it then and installed VCL and the many other software packages I need on the machine at last. This time, I installed Windows, then VCL and the rest of the needed programs and then I made all the windows updates. Now VCL works fine. Like that other program ...

I like windows. I like it to reinstall, activate and / or register an OS with about 35 programs, update the OS and all the applications, install the patches and all the needed preferences. And I like especially the preferences thing: Email applications are programmed NOT to save the mail account data or the cathegories list or the information, which contact folders are normally activated and which ar not or ... or ... or ... in a reinstallable way or in a human readable format, so please retype and reset all the needed things manually ... for 8 accounts, some about 20 cathegories, 12 contact folders and so on and so on. Yes! Many graphic suites could export their preferences. But not each of them can import them also! Office applications are so fine preferencable with all the scriptable gadgets and menues and button bars and path entries and ... . And they give us the big chance to think about the need of each of these preferences we used the last time, because they ignore most of the settings by the nice try to reinstall these settings ... Yes. I LIKE THAT!

So: Thanks for your assistance. Bye (for the moment ...).
