Transcoding Help

Postby SupLegolas » 28 Aug 2009 03:00

Hi everyone,

First time poster, long time noob user of VLC. But today, that changed when I found you can TRANSCODE with VLC too! I was so excited, I wanted to transcode some AVI [DivX] so I went to the "convert" option and selected the file I wanted. Then I chose the profile MPEG-4 + AAC. So, that was all good, selected the destination for the file, named it something generic, and left my computer for an hour while it transcoded. When done, there was a file there, with the extension ".ps", which was play-able in VLC [of course, it plays everything!], but not in WMP or Quicktime or anything.

When I switched profiles to another format, it didn't change, even though .ps is some sort of vector graphics extension. So, essentially, using whatever profile I wanted, it always returned a .ps file. I was wondering if I could just add ".mpg" or something to the end and have it play as a normal MPEG file, but thought that may be to risky without checking. So here I am!

Just to note, when I ask VLC to "display output" of transcode, it plays fine, but VLC plays everything, so that was expected. But it's always that blasted .ps file, and not something I can use like .mp4 or .mpg, regardless of what profile I choose.

Thanks in advance,

Ian

For WMP, try ASF+WMV

So, I switched the encapsulation to ASF/WMV, but the file still comes out as "Episode 02.ps". Should I just change the filename to "Episode 02.ps.wmv"? If it's just some naming error that occurs, then that would be no problem to change, but I'm confused as to why VLC transcodes into .ps, no matter what encapsulation I choose.

But the only question I have now is: Can I just change the file extension to .wmv and have it play properly in WMP?

Thanks again,

Ian

When you type in the file name, try typing in the extension you want. (*.flv, *.mov, etc.)
