Just want to play one track at a time in a playlist

Tried all the settings. Looked through about 500 postings. Cannot find the answer.

I use VLC to play sound effects for a theater production. I just want one file to play when selected. Not all files following it in the playlist (media library seems to do exactly the same thing).

Preferences > Playlist > Play and stop.
