Trouble capturing RM video - VLC 1.0.1

I'm running VLC 1.0.1 on my Mac (OSX 10.5.7) and am having trouble capturing RM streams. The streams in question - and I've tried several - are an hour or so long, but when I can get VLC to start capturing at all instead of creating a 4KB placeholder file - either using the "Open Network" or "Streaming/Exporting Wizard" - I (a) can't tell whether it's working without checking the ever-expanding file size, and (b) can't seem to get it to capture more than 5 minutes without it just spontaneously stopping capture (which I can tell because the file stops expanding) or crashing.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong so that I can capture the whole thing?
