Getting a list of local devices

Is there some way using VLC on command line to get a list of local devices that could be used as a source of video?

e.g on windows this would be direct show devices on linux I'm not sure

I know the list can be seen in the GUI but is there a call I can make with command line VLC to return a list of possible devices?
