Playing embedded subtitles in an avi file

Hi,

I received a file which claims to have the subtitle embedded in the avi (not hard coded, whatever that means). So, I opened the AVI file in VLC, and selected Video -> Video Track -> Subtitle - en;02.

But the subtitles are NOT being displayed while playing the video :(

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
