Preferences Won't Stick

I've had a problem with various versions of VLC on Windows and Mac:

Sometimes changes to the preferences won't stick.

For example, right now I'm using version 0.9.9a on Mac OSX. If I go into the preferences, select Video and then adjust the Prefix of Video Snapshots and click the Save button, the changes are not remembered. When I re-open the preferences, the change is gone.

Sometimes the change sticks, sometimes it doesn't. I've even had to go into the vlcrc preferences file and manually change settings (or delete the preferences file altogether and start over).

Any idea what's up with this?
