Performance question, VLC vs. WMP

Postby travisbell » 22 Dec 2004 08:21

Hey guys, I am currently comparing the video performance of a 720p (wmv encoded) and a 1080i ts rip that I have made from a recording.

The 720p clip uses approx. 65% of my cpu w. DD5.1. The 1080i clip however uses 100% w/ the DD5.1 track.

Is there anyway I can speed VLC up at all? What is the main reason there is such a performance difference?

Thanks in advance,

720p stands for resolution of 1280x720 pixels
1080i is a High Definition TV (HDTV) standard displayed using interlaced scanning at a 1920 wide by 1080 high pixel resolution.

You're looking at roughly twice as many pixels to process -- it might use 130% CPU, if such a thing were possible, as the processing is pretty much linear in pixel count.

You might try cutting the frame rate. Depending on what you're trying to accomplish you might also decrease the output resolution (if you're streaming, using transcoding, you can control the output resolution and frame rate independent of the input).
