Playing SubRIP (srt) subtitles embedded in Matroska (mkv) fi

Playing SubRIP (srt) subtitles embedded in Matroska (mkv) fi

Postby JW 301 » 18 Apr 2009 17:42

Hi there,

I have a problem mit Matroska (mkv) files that contain SubRIP-subtitles (srt)

First, I'm not quite sure if srt in mkv is supported by VLC, but it kind of works, only with one problem:

The subtitles are shown too long, so they are not vanishing when they're over. The next subtitle is shown, but the old one remains, so you can't read anything.
VLC just shows both subtitles at the same position for some seconds.

I tried this with various video streams in the mkv, such as divx, xvid and some types of mpg-video. When playing exactly the same (!) subtitle from an external srt file everything works fine.
After I found nothing about SubRIP being supported within Matroska files (http://wiki.videolan.org/Matroska), but ssa being definitively supported, I tried using ssa files insted of srt files in the Matroska container, the subtitles were recognized, but not shown, so I could select these subtitles, but there was no sign of them in the video.

Has anybody an idea how I could use subtitles in mkv files? SSA and SRT are the only formats I can add to mkv files, but both of them do not work. Is this a bug in VLC? Or is it simply not supported? Is it planned to be supported in future releases?

Thank you for your help

PS: I tried this on the following versions:

VLC media player 0.9.9 (Grishenko), both on XP SP3 and Vista SP1
VLC media player portable 0.9.9 (Grishenko) on XP SP3
and the nightly VLC media player 0.9.10-git (Grishenko)

I also tried various files, so it is not dependent on specific media files

OK, thanks,

I now tried two of the 1.0.0 releases (pre1 and pre2), the problem is now visible more clearly, I think.
In fact, I think in 1.0.0 is a function called overlapping subtitles, so when two subtitles are to be shown at the same time, they're not at the same position any more, but the new one appears above the old one.

This is quite good, but there is still the problem, that the files I tested with (double checked this) do not overlap. Somehow, VLC seems to take a longer time period for the single subtitle then the input says.

For example the following bit of subtitle:

Code: Select all

84 00:05:15,149 --> 00:05:19,108 Look, I passed up a lunch with Michelle Pfeiffer to be here. . . 85 00:05:19,309 --> 00:05:23,985 . . .so can we desist from all of this inane posturing?
You can see, subtitle no 84 is over when subtitle 85 is first shown, but VLC still shows subtitle 84 a bit longer. Maybe it has a problem recognizing the exact length of the subtitles, and rounds, I don't know, just a guess.

And I tried again, when loading exactly the same subtitle from an external file, everything is ok. It's only within the mkv container

Thank you,

hi i found out something new

the problem only appears when using matroska files created by avi mux.
with matroska files created by virtualdubmod, everything works fine.

is this still a bug of vlc?

because i tried another player (it was kmplayer i think) that showed no problem.

i cannot always use virtualdubmod, because avi mux has more options

thank you
