No status bar in Firefox

No status bar in Firefox
I have VLC set as my player for most file types in Firefox. Unfortunately, no status bar appears when they play so I can't pause, skip around, etc and I can't see how far through a video I am. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere to enable these basic features?
