audio problem again in G5

You still don't get it right?

I'm a student, with no money, a social life, a position on the board of 2 sports clubs, way too little time in a day and way too many people who keep harassing me all day long.

Similar, though perhaps less extreme situations are present for most of the developers. we NEED to do jack for VLC. We do what we can, when we have the time, when we feel like it and when it suits us. As could you.

I've committed a fix for the "failed to set buffer size: [nope]" issue.

Please test the latest nightly build and provide feedback.

I'm having the same problem on a G5 single 1.8g.
Same CPU as you (OSX 10.3.2) and I had the same audio problem. Then I put Coreaudio = 1 and now it works perfectly using the internal speaker. But I noticed that sometimes Coreaudio turns back to "0", don't know why...
I also have another big problem: I can only read DVD's or VIDEO_TS's predefined audio track. Everytime I try to switch to another track, VLC crashes :(

On my ibookG4 it all works pretty good, no problems at all.

does anyone know how to get VLC 0.7.2 to work with headphones? i still getting this error coreaudio: failed to set buffer size: [nope]

jack

Yeah...

Postby jack » 13 Aug 2004 08:00

I have dual 2ghz G5 with 10.3.2 with VLC 0.7 and "coreaudio: failed to set buffer size: [nope]" error message

I have a analogue line out to an amp.

Here's how I managed to fix it.

1) advanced options->modules->audio output->coreaudio - set to audio output value to 1.
2) Quit VLC (important).
3) Open Apple system prefs > sound > output section.
4) Physically unplug stereo line out cable from back of G5.
5) Plug stereo line out back in to G5. Note 'Line out' appears in device list as it is automatically detected by g5.
6) Click to select Line out with mouse.
7) Quit sys prefs and launch VLC, sound should be working now.

It seems as if the line out is not being detected properly at mac boot time. Digital out is then the only choice. You may have to check the line out is selected everytime you reboot or logout. I hope this bug is fixed in 10.3.3.
Worked like a charm for me...thanks!

audio problem: revisited and solved (maybe)

Postby Kallenico » 24 Aug 2004 13:46

Just to tell you how I got along with VCL on my G5 2x2GHz:

Version 0.7.2 did not give me any sound on DVDs, all other video formats worked well. I checked the forum, tried "coreaudio-rev=1" with no effect but a general breakdown of sound on the computer until restart. So I did some more research and found the build

vlc-macosx-200406120324.dmg

Installed this, and again, trouble, trouble, trouble. Hardly any improvement, only dealt one flaw in for the other. Anyway, I keep researching and find a page with the most actual build for download which is at

http://xserve.via.ecp.fr/~videolan/macosx/

and to most recent (at this time) is

vlc-macosx-200408230305.dmg

Installed it. Guess what: Sound problems, but in addition, the "freetype" module was broken, and the menus on the DVD did NOT work! Got all kinds of super-weird error messages. Okay, so I dump this build and am almost ready to give up. But hey, just for the pleasure of wasting time in front of my computer, I re-install the older build (vlc-macosx-200406120324.dmg). I set the coreaudio module to "1", quit the app, open System Prefs, choose line-out, unplug my speaker set, plug it in again, quit System Prefs, start VCL app again. And now, here's the miraculous outcome:

It does play sound and image on all formats except DVD.
It plays image and starts to play sound after a short delay on DVDs with Region Code 2 (Europe and Japan).
It spits out ugly noises hardly recogniseable as the sound of DVDs with Region Code 1 (US), and this only after I manually choose "audio device 1" in the "sound" menu, which frequently crahes the app.

So here's my lowdown: I am okay with VCL now. My Superdrive is set to Region 1. So I can play DVDs with Region Code 1 with Apple's DVD Player Software, no problem. In order not to suffer from limited Region Code changes, I play my Region Code 2 DVDs with VCL.

Still, it'd be great to have a version of VCL that does everything, because Apple's DVD Player sucks for it's conformity with the stoooopid DVD industry's standards cash-in strategy. I have no clue of "coreaudio" whatsoever so unfortunately, I can not be of any help for the developers of VCL (who I highly respect for their efforts).

Anyway, there is another solution for those who can not get VCL to work. In the Mac OSX system prefs, choose "CDs and DVDs", and set the standard action when inserting a Video DVD to "None". The DVD will then simply mount as a volume, but no app will autostart to play it. Download MacTheRipper (comes with full documentation, super-easy to use) at

http://www.wormintheapple.gr/macdvd/mtr.html

and also check out the app DVD2OneX (linked to on this site). Remember that you are not allowed to make backup copys of DVDs you don't OWN!! Rip the DVD and reburn it with region code set to "0" or to "1234568" (seven is restricted, nobody uses it). And there, you just kicked the industry's ass! Your ripped and re-burnt DVDs will play endlessly on your Mac and every other DVD device, you can copy them to VHS video, and you will spend the rest of your life worrying about how you can do all this without breaking copyright laws (and tons of other things that can get you in jail).

Having the same problem - ran the latest nightly build

Postby philipt18 » 30 Aug 2004 23:33

I'm running a G5 2.5gDP and ran into the same problem described here...but with a slight twist.

I had the same exact problem described in the previous posts. Same error message, same switch to Digital Out, etc.

I have an M-Audio Revolution 7.1 card installed which I hadn't used before. After running into these problems, today I plugged in simple stereo speakers to the M-Audio card and switched the audio output in System Preferences. It seemed to work great for the first couple of divx videos I played, but then I ran into trouble. The third video I played started playing the soundtrack of the video just fine - but there was no voice (as if there were multiple audio tracks). Weird. Eventually I realized I could switch the audio to the internal speaker from within VLC. That seemed to work (as far as outputting through the unintended speaker output is working).

I tried to download the latest nightly build (August 30 2004) but it didn't do any better. It did give me a different error message - I think also mentioned in this forum about a font problem or something. I forget exactly. Anyways, it had the same audio problems.

So for now I have the system audio set to output from my 7.1 card, but in VLC I have the audio set to output from my internal speaker. Any hope on the horizon that I'll be able to use my speaker system again?

G5 vlc

Postby Hill Person » 31 Aug 2004 00:58

well i just moved to my new G5 and carbon copy cloned from the G4. when i tried to run 0.7.0 i got no sound and an error window. New G5 has 5.1 on optical link. running 10.3.5 like the G4.

The error window gave me the coreaudio nope message and the log file suggested that the MPEG4 plugin had been rejected.

loaded 0.7.2 no error message but no sound

was given same two choices of audio as others above and when i tried the other setting i got the hissing noise. so one gave no sound the other hissing.

partially followed the advice given above went to prefs/audio output/coreaudio and found the value 0 which i changed to 1. No change.
closed and quit vlc.

went to sound panel and deselected 'digital' for another and then reselected digital.

now it all works !!

I solved it...

Hi everybody

I had the same problem, tried all tricks... no luck.

Then, I try another way. When I started mi G5 (2 x 2 GB) for the first time this morning, I imported all data from my old iMac G3 using the guided tour included in the G5. Everything worked ok, thats what I thought.

But after experiencing the same problem of no sound in vlc, I tried another way:
- Reinstalled Mac Os in the G5 using the included disks without keeping network and users information but without formating disk
- I DONT imported data from the old computer (I had in the hard disks)
- I copy manually the user data (documents, images, music, etc.) from the previous system folder in the root of my hd to my folder.
- I installed again vlc
- The I open the preferences->sound->output, unpluged the audio out cable, pluged it again and selected the analog output.
- I restarted vlc, open preferences, advanced, modules, coreaudio, set it to 1 in place of -1, quit and restarted.
- OK, now it works.

It seems that when importing data from the old computer, something gets really weird. A fresh reinstall and the tricks already posted in this forum. works. :-)

Happy luck to everybody.

Regards, Fernando

similar problem but now fixed...

Postby disposable2004 » 25 Nov 2004 07:21

hi folks, i had exactly the same symptoms described in this and similar posts.

1. open vob w/ a52 audio, no sound, discover vlc is trying to send to digital output
2. force to pcm output, get loud scratchy version of soundtrack
3. quickly, app crashes and now all audio programs no longer work

in addition, i noticed the following:
1. in system preferences, i could not force the system to select the built in audio for it's output. everytime i closed it and came back, it was set to the digital output
2. strangely, the built-in audio selection had this text in the description: (ispk)

i had tried all of the tricks listed and nothing was working. i got aggressive and moved the entries in /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/HAL to the desktop.

somehow, my system is now working again...ie, VLC can play a52 audio correctly from the same VOBs that gave it trouble earlier. trying to think of what is different now:
1. i never moved the isight plugin back into it's correct place. digital performer has a problem with it anyway, so i left it out.
2. now...the audio system preference is allowing me to select the built-in audio for output. and strangely, the (ispk) is no where to be seen. perhaps this is related to the isight thing...dunno...just guessing

anyway, thought i'd share this with the community in case anyone else is continuing to have the troubles i had earlier.

hi folks, a further update to help anyone else that has the G5 audio problem.

1. apparently the name of the output device keeps changing. whenever it changes from "Line out" to "Built-in audio (ispk)", it appears to cause a problem with the built in audio. ie, once this happens:
-the default output for core audio changes to the digital output
-VLC now decides to use the digitial output instead of the built in audio
-forcing VLC to use the PCM audio output causes the crashing behavior reported

2. once this happens, i notice that if i reboot:
-the name of the output device remains "Built-in audio (ispk)"
-however, *now*, built in audio is selectable
-VLC no longer has a problem--ie, it chooses PCM audio and does not crash

3. then sometime later (not exactly sure when or how), the core audio output device renames itself "Line Out"

Not really a solution but at least this is something others can look for...

cheers

I am also having similar (Exactly the same) problems.
I duplicated what you did disposable2004 by deleteing the iSight plugin. then rebooting with my headphones plugged into lineout.

When I rebooted I was able to play though them fine.

My setup is a little different.
I have HTPC (Home Theater PC) connected VIA 1394/FireWire to my HD Set top box. This computer is running VLC player Streaming this input via OGG encapsulation to a gigabit network.
Then I have my G5 on the same gig network attempting to connect to it. I can always get video fine, but audio is kinda so-so.

I went for months without problem, but for some reason it is starting to act up :?

Just to tell you how I got along with VCL on my G5 2x2GHz:
THANKS A LOT!

After reading and testing all possible solutions in this thread, your was the one that fixed my problem!

Now I will never change these settings or upgrade VLC.

i am checking this board very often because i hope to see some news on 5.1 sound on (i)mac g5. You were looking for mac developers. Is there chance that this issue will be handled soon?

There's nothing more that i want from this player.... just that i could enjoy 5.1 sound.

This worked for me:

Open prefs
Check the advanced box
Set Audio -> Audio output frequency (Hz) to -1
Set Modules - Audio output -> coreaudio -> Audio Device to 1

:)

You dont need to restart, just go to Audio MIDI Setup in the Utilities folder and change the format from encoded digital to 2ch 16/24bit.

It is the changing to "encoded digital" that stuffs up all analogue outputs.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the G5!!!!!

Postby akigolf » 21 Dec 2004 21:36

"If I do the change I get sound out of the speakers, but it's most noise. It is possible to relate a small part of the noise to the playing file. However, it's not possible to understand voices or listen to the music. I would guess it's 90% noise and 10% real audio..."

THIS IST EXACTLY THE PROBLEM I FACE SINCE TODAY WITH VLC 0.7

I know for sure that it has nothing to do with the G5, I know this because yesterday everything worked fine with VLC 0.7 and my G5 and 10.3.4 (for exactly one year!!), today I switched to 10.3.5 and suddenly I have the same problem as discribed obove.
I tried VLC 0.7 and VLC 0.8 (the newest one), with almost the same resuld: No sound with my .VOB files (as I said the same files from the same DVD worked perfectly under 10.3.4 and VLC on the same mashine (G5)), and when I switch the VLC-AUDIO-Prefs than my whole G5 is without sound (even not the signal sound is working) and the film just gives this freaky noise with just a very littly original-VOB-sound.
The Sound-Phenomenon is just with VLC 0.7, with VLC 0.8 I get no error message and absultely no sound (also no noise) even if change the settings). With 0.7 I get this famous error-message (Buffer ... blablaba).

After playing around with the settings of VLC 0.8 while playing my .VOB (remember: without sound), the whole OSX has no sound anymore even as I shutted VLC OFF the sound won´t come back. Even a Finder-restart didn´t brougnt the sound back, hopefully it will come back when I do a complete Restart of the mashine. THIS IS SERIOUS!!!

So I think it´s clear that the problem starts with 10.3.5 and I guees that every other later version of OSX has the same problems (please let me know in this threat). Maybe it has something to do with the OSX Audio Core???

After changing the 0 to 1 in coreaudio:

------------------------
VLC-Preferences-Module-audio output-coreaudio
Set Divice from 0 to 1
------------------------

Everything worked fine again ...well for now ;O)))

G5 Coreaudio VLC

Postby yan » 30 Jan 2005 00:52

Like other people here I use the audio output change from 0 > 1 as a workaround to keep my G5 audio turning to garbage.
What is frustrating is that VLC resets this value to 0 whenever I watch a video file with a different audio track format than the one preceeding it.

For Example.
I set coreaudio device to 1 and watch 5 videos with mp3 audio tracks. After each video I check the coreaudio prefs and note the device setting is still 1. I then watch a video with an AC3 audio track and see immediately that VLC has reset coreaudio device to 0. If I watch another video then the G5's audio turns to garbage.

My current way is to check the audio prefs each time I open a vid and reset to 1 if necessary. If I forget to do this and the audio turns to garbage I then logout and back in again and this seems to fix it if I'm lucky - else restart. Like other people my audio output device in the Mac system prefs is set to ISPK after using VLC - I can reset this by physically unplugging my lineout mini jack and plugging in again and this reset the audio to 'Line-out'. Is this a conflict with the iSight Audio Driver?

VLC 0.8.1
Mac OS x 10.3.7
iSight / Dual g5 2ghz
