No subtitles

I installed the 0.9.8a vlc (the latest, I think), and now it will not show the subttles for a video. Just the title of the clip, in the beginning, and that's it. The videos are .mkv files, with intergrated subtitles (or something like that, I'm not exactly sure...). So, what's up? The prev version (0.8.something) worked fine.
