DVD and .sub subtitles

Is it possible to play a DVD along with an external .sub subtitle textfile (say, for another language support)?

How do I do it?

VLC is 0.8.1, system is MacOSX 10.3.6.

yes, using the --sub-file command line switch (or the similar option somewhere deep inside the preferences)

Aw, man, I can't believe it!! Does this obvious action require messing with the command line? Is this really 21st century, or I've pushed the wrong button?
