VLC stream wasn't saved to file on exit

Postby pdzitac » 09 Mar 2009 05:39

Recently I have streamed a video to file. Initially the stream was saved to file (file was small ~6MB). On the second attempt the streamed file got close to 1GB and this time it wasn't saved. The file was there and could be replayed untill VLC was closed. When I restarted VLC and attempted to reopene the .ps file it was empty (only had a few KB in it). The recording was gone.
Suggestion for VLC developers: it would be very useful while starting the streaming process to have a warning (maybe a job summary) to warn the user that due to the selected options the input stream will not be saved to file. It would spare the user a lot of frustration. VLC is a great piece of work otherwise. A big thank you to the developers.
Question: is there a way to recover the lost file?

Did you not "stream" an empty next entry (vlc://quit ?) into the same file?

Hi Remi,
If you want to stream a new job isn't VLC asking for a new file name?
After streaming the file I closed VLC. I didn't stream anything (not intentionally anyway). Later I wanted to replay the file again. I started VLC, selected Media -> Open File, selected the file and pressed the play button. Nothing happened. Eventually I looked at the file and instead of about 1GB it was 228 bytes (.ps).

Re "vlc://quit". How could I do that?

Thank you Remi for a great piece of software. I am impressed and so are many other people.

Best regards.

Remi,

I definitely didn't stream an empty stream into the file.
When I finished streaming the video the file was there and I was able to replay it.
Then I closed VLC.
When I restarted VLC and wanted to replay the video file it was empty.
Please check the software. I believe that it is a bug.

Regards,
Paul

I cannot reproduce your problem.
