VLC media sharing on LAN or via Windows Media Player

Postby Oscar16123 » 08 Mar 2009 01:03

I have a Yamaha RXV3800 receiver that can connect via a LAN to allow a PC to share Windows Media Player files when "sharing" is enabled in WMP. I much prefer to use VLC as my player and would a) preferably I would like to determine if I can also share my files/playlists directly with my Yamaha receiver from VLC Media Player & 2) if not, connect my VLC to my WMP to inturn share.

How do I enable this type of sharing in VLC, make the connection with the receiver? Stream my files from VLC to WMP to share with the receiver across the LAN?

I am only so proficient, so keep it relatively simple for a novice with the PC to understand.

I am running WinXP Professional, SR2; Have VLC Media Player 9.8a; WMP 11.0.

Thanks in advance! ...Oscar16123

Hi!

I'm Steve Summers, 46. I've been a tech since 81. Not one problem, unsolved.

Solving this one right now.

YAMAHA: YOUR INSTRUCTIONS NEED TO ADD, WHAT I'LL EVENTUALLY, ADD HERE. DUMMIES.

THe instructions are CLEAR, about HOW TO CONNECT TO THE WIRELESS NETWORK.

THERE ARE NO INSTRUCTIONS, ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR PC'S AUDIO, PLAY THROUGH THE NETWORK, AND OUT THE RECEIVER.

WHICH, CLEARLY IT *CAN* DO.

JUST NO CLEAR OR OBVIOUS PATH.

AT LEAST, TO US.

DUMMIES!

-

OK.

So far, I know:

If you put mp3's in your 'My Music' Folder, you can navigate to them and play them by the receiver remote (viewing the receivers info on your TV.)

MY ISSUES ARE THESE:

I'd like to play MP4 VIDEOS. It isn't. It is spec'd to support MP4s, (AND, the BIOS IS Updated.)

It shows them as greyed-out on the TV.

I'd like all of my computer sound to come out. Not just play tracks.

I prefer vlc, for example.

About to play ESO, also.

Now obviously, I can solve the problem in 2 seconds.

Run a wire.

I don't want to!

So I'll find the correct solution, and post it here.

Since this was the top Google result for:

"how to connect vlc to a yamaha receiver"

Ttts!

Hey!

If you didn't read my previous post, please do so now!

HERE IS THE PROMISED SOLUTION!

(My apologies, for any typos. But, not for my formatting!)

:o)

-

OK! Here's THE DEAL:

I like to be thorough. Please bear with me.

**** Windows PC to Modern Receiver (2017, Yamaha RX-V581) Connection Options:

Wireless (Network)

Wired (Network)

Bluetooth

Android Cell

HDMI

Digital - Optical

Digital (RCA)

3.5 Stereo Mini-Plug to Dual-RCAs

*** There are also * many *, "Streaming," Options:

Windows Media Player / Windows Media Center

vlc Media Player

WinAMP, (with an appropriate Plug-in.)

*** Also:

JUKE

Pandora

Spotify

*** AND:

Many others of both types.

MultiCast, (I guess.... Android Phone-Control?) (No PC Version. <- MAKE THAT *CLEAR*, YAMAHA.)
AirPlay, (I guess.... Apple Phone(/Mac)-Control?)
USB Thumb-Drives....

(....Are all options, also.)

-------

OK. I explained above how:

* A.) The Wireless Connection Proceedure IS well-documented. So I won't cover it.

(It's clearly documented in the "Yamaha RX-V581 Receiver Owner's Manual." (Pages 37-44.))

* B.) I also covered above, how to THEN, easily, play mp3s, using the Receiver Remote, (and your TV, as the Receiver's Monitor.)

(Just drop them into your: (Username)\My Music Folder.)

-

* C.) You can easily convert any MP4 to an mp3, by using (Windows) Movie Maker. It is part of Windows Essentials 2012. Simply:

C-1.) Install Movie Maker.

C-2.) Open your Video (MP4) with Movie Maker. (Many ways to. Open Movie Maker, then drag-and-drop your Video onto it.)

C-3.) Wait a minute while it prepares itself.

C-4.) Select "SAVE AS..." from the Main Menu.

C-5.) Look for the mp3/Audio file option. (Select the HIGHEST "BITRATE". Often: "320".) / (And leave the "Hz" ALONE!)

-

-

-

-

The "Streaming", and "Other" Options above, provide partial, but incomplete solutions.

HERE'S THE COMPLETE SOLUTIONS:

Allow me to repeat this list:

Wireless (Network) - Unfortunately, this tech is still immature....

It has a: "Severe, Sync-Issue."

SEVERE.

It can easily be fixed, for Videos and Movies played through vlc Media Player. vlc provides a simple adjuster for sync issues. Voila.

And the sync, would PROBABLY, always, be the same. So, set it and forget it.

BUT...

What about System Sounds, and Games???

NO FIX.

BYE-BYE WIRELESS.

[[[[[[[ S O L V E D . ]]]]]]]

Moving on.

Wired (Network) - Not explored.

Bluetooth - Tested, and explained, here: System-wide, easy Setup and Control, acceptable Performance. (What you're looking for, from the Wireless Option.) TWO DRAWBACKS: 1.) I noticed a 1/5 of a second sync delay. It was extremely minor, and normally, imperceptible. 2.) The sound over Blutooth is popularly commented on as sounding 'Tinny'. I did notice such a difference. It was also nearly-imperceptible, but, enough, that I decided, to go: Wired. If it doesn't bother you, Then: BLUETOOTH, IS FOR YOU. The setup is in Networking in Control Panel. Knock yourself out. Google if you need more help with that. And, ENJOY!

:o)

Android Cell - Not explored.

HDMI - Best Wired Option. Includes Video.

Digital - Optical - 2nd Best Wired Option.

Digital (RCA) - 3rd Best Wired Option.

3.5 Stereo Mini-Plug to Dual-RCAs - 4th Best Wired Option.

SO, THERE'S YOUR: **** COMPLETE SOLUTION, AS PROMISED. ****

(If you missed it:) [[[ WIRELESS: Bluetooth (Easy Setup) / WIRED: (HDMI/Digital - Optical/Digital (RCA)/3.5 Stereo Mini-Plug to Dual-RCAs) ....IN THAT ORDER. ]]]

TTYL! Have a good one, and GOD bless you all!

I'M SO TIRED!

I COMPLETELY FORGOT, SOME OF THE IMPORTANT INFO.

IF YOU WANT WIRELESS, WITH ITS SYNC-ISSUES AND ALL, HERE'S HOW:

I'm sorry, but I'm tired, and would prefer this done.

Please read this personal conversation. It has that info.

Have a Good one!

-------

Got a sync issue. Can fix in VLF easy, but prob not my game. So optical cable is prob best answer.

Gonna try Bluetooth, but hear it's bad

Stream What You Hear is the solution for wireless. Need to fix sync in vlc. Trying Bluetooth, need game in sync. Else optical cable. Oh, and I can try Icecast + Altacast, another probable solution. That's it for options that I can find. I'll prob hit Meier for an optical cable in a few!

Actually my bad. As long as hdmi transmits multi channel, I'll use it. Got a long one. Easy selection in windows too.

Google those 3 pegs. See if you can find better. Something "in sync automatically.'

Airfoil, $29, sucks bad, BTW. Not that one! I'll try the by, then do hdmi. All done man!

The bt is easy as the hdmi. Both super easy.

So here's the final answer. Wireless has a sync issue. Can fix in vlc, but not games. So it's out. Bluetooth is rocking, but, minor

My Buddy, actually walked in my door at that point! sO i STOPPED. aND, YOU KNOW THE REST.

So, those 3 programs.

Email me if good questions. Take care, GOD bless.

By the way.

As a professional, I always make sure the 'customer', is "satisfied."

I, actually, failed to answer your specific question.

Heh.

No, I did not....

You asked your question in 2009, it is now 2017. The options concerning "Streaming" in vlc, have changed completely, since then.

They are both:

PLENTIFUL,

and

VERY ADVANCED.

I'm CERTAIN, a simple Google search, on any of the Options listed in vlc, will contain complete, relatively-simple, and direct, answers, to your specific question.

And, as I said. Just email me. I'll get your answer.

!

I always do....

Ttyal.

YAMAHA:

YOU NEED TO PUT THIS INFO, CLEANED-UP, IN YOUR MANUAL FOR YOUR RECEIVER.

CALL IT: PC HOOK-UP.

AND, FILL-IN THE "NOT EXPLORED"'S IN LIKE FASHION.

SERIOUSLY.

AND, SWEEET RECEIVER TOO.

Sorry! One final note:

In Windows 7 Home 64-bit, The Sound Output Options of:

Digital

and

Digital (Optical)

are:

BACKWARDS!

YES! They are incorrect in Windows. Labeled backwards.

If you don't get sound, click the other one, for your output selection.

That's important. Cost me 15 minutes.

That should be all!

Until Later!

Give some time for thread activity. I'll answer all additional, related questions. Then you can lock it down.

This should help a lot of people. This info couldn't be found by ME, anywhere else.
