Problems playing recorded satellite broadcasts

Hi,

I hope someone can help me with this issue, I am a complete newbe with all of this...

I am recording Free To Air satellite radio broadcasts (Technomate 5400) with an intention to convert them to MP3. Unfortunately I seem to be falling over at the first hurdle and I am having problems playing the files. The only program I have managed to have any luck with is the latest version of Media Player Classic using the latest K-Lite Codec Pack - so I know the files can be played, although it complains about a wrong file type. However, as I wish to convert the files I wish to use VLC.

If I am correct, is it possible to configure VLC to ignore this issue and continue regardless? If is something else - can somebody please put me straight?

Note: This error also does not allow recorded video to playback.
