Using VLC with an Hauppauge PVR USB2 device

Postby denisvh » 08 Feb 2009 10:00

Hello,
I use VLC on windows (XP and Vista) but I don't know wether this issue is specific to windows or not.
I use VLC version 0.9.2
VLC works perfectly as a viewing program for the hauppauge PVR USB2 device. In fact it's a better viewer than the one supplied with the device.
But VLC has as well a recording feature, and for this functionality, unfortunately it's less efficient.
What is possible is to record the braodcasts by using a mpeg-ts formatting without using any codec (the flow is a mpeg2 one). This works, but if I want to convert the file I get into the AVI format, the synchronization between the sound and the pictures is lost.
If I record videos with the software supplied with the device, it can be converted into avi without loosing that synchronization.
I remember that in a previous version of VLC (0.8.6c) something better could be done. It was possible to dump directly the input flow to a disk file. When doing that, the resulting file had the same capabilities as the one obtained with the hauppauge viewer, it could be converted into avi without loosing time synchronization. One drawback of this feature was that when doing that, VLC was unable to display the video at the same time.
The functionality still exists in version 0.9.2, but it does not longer work. When started with the direct dump, VLC stops immediately with the following message :
Impossible de reconnaitre le format du média d'entrée:
Le format de 'dshow://’ n’a pu être détecté. Vérifiez les messages pour plus de détails.
(I use the french version of vlc).
About the sync problem, I think that Hauppauge adds empty pictures to resync images and sound and that when packing the flow VLC drop them. Of course, with a direct dump, probably it does not change anything to the original flow, which remains in sync.
So the best would be to recover this direct dump functionality, and by the way, the ability to view the video while recording it.
Best regards.
D.F.
