cropped video?

hello. I have meet some problems watching an .avi and .flv with vlc player. I explain: the video plays but the image is cropped. I've been playing with the proportions and crop settings but it leaded to nothing. What is even stranger is that the player did show me correctly the video once. But then when I closed my video to watch an other one, it just repeated the same problem. I just can't find any relation between when it works bad and when it works well(works maybe once on thirty tries). please help me if you find a potential solution.

Did you fully remove the preferences and cache files? To do this close all instances of VLC and go to (enter into Windows Explorer address bar):
%appdata%

And delete the "vlc" folder (this is assuming you are on Windows - for *nix remove ~/.config/vlc).
