No picture with xvid .avi file

Postby loveleah » 23 Jan 2009 02:25

I've downloaded an .avi file, which according to both VLC and GSpot is using the xvid codec. Audio works, but video does not. This file works for other people, so it has to be just me/my computer that isn't working.

I thought VLC player came with xvid support, but just in case, I downloaded the codec and installed it. Still nothing. I've also tried playing this file in WMP, Quicktime, and DivX player. Same problems there.

I then thought that maybe my download got corrupted, so I tried getting other versions of it but they don't work either - however, they're all from the same community and in the same format, so I can't guarantee they aren't just mirrors of each other.

I'm running Windows Vista SP1, and the latest version of VLC. What am I missing here?

To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

As stated previously, I'm on Windows Vista Home Premium, with Service Pack 1. 32-bit. VLC media player version 0.9.8a.

The messages dialog doesn't say anything except "main info: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface." That's what it said on the default, and then I changed the verbosity from 0 to 2, and closed it and opened messages again, and that's still all it says.

As j-b said posting the messages with a verbosity of 2 will be helpful (put the messages in "Code" tags preferably :)).
I've downloaded an .avi file, which according to both VLC and GSpot is using the xvid codec. Audio works, but video does not. This file works for other people, so it has to be just me/my computer that isn't working.
XviD should work fine with VLC.
I thought VLC player came with xvid support, but just in case, I downloaded the codec and installed it. Still nothing. I've also tried playing this file in WMP, Quicktime, and DivX player. Same problems there.
VLC uses it's own codecs so installing DirectShow codec packs won't make any difference for VLC.

Does this occur for all videos (i.e. ones not from the same place/community)? If so, and you are just getting a black screen in the shape/size of the video try disabling video overlay:

Arite.
