Ripping a DVD - Error

I've tried to rip a DVD a couple times now and it doesn't seem to work. I follow an instructional video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdQKtxto7C4 or type "vlc dvd rip" in youtube). But each time I try it, as it starts to stram, VLC shuts down and I get the Windows error message "VLC has stopped working". This happens almost immediately after starting to stream.

Any ideas?
