By 'sample', we mean give us one of these files that don't play.

Looks to be a broken MPEG file.

MPlayer can play it with video, however here is some of the output:

Well, you're recording OTA broadcasts, some errors are inevitable.

It looks like VLC is complaining about the timecodes though.

Hi, I have a similar problem w/ VLC playing mpeg2 files generated by ProgDVB. There is sound but no video (black screen).

I am using Windows XP SP3, with latest NVidia driver release (Nov 2008). I am using VLC v.98a.

I tried the following but didn't help:

- deleted old pref/cache @ %appdata%/vlc
- turned off overlay
- used DirectX 3D output (also tried Windows GDI/OpenGL)
- turned off 'embedded video'

I restarted VLC for every change I made. Nothing helped. I can view same mpeg2 file in Windows MediaPlayer/PoweDVDv8/TotalMediaTheatre fine. I love VLC but is there a way VLC can play the mpg2 file ok?

I managed to get a vlc log output (--extraintf=logger --verbose=2) and here is the log:

Do you have a sample you could upload?

I've zipped up 3 mpeg2 files generated by Progdvb for you to look into:

The samples didn't work in VLC 1.0.0-git either (no video). They worked in MPlayer though. Fill a bug.

This is a very, very old problem. See this thread for details (and links to several similar older threads): viewtopic.php?f=14&t=39702&start=0 I hoped that the problem would be solved but over the years I have kind of given up hope on that. But hey, 2009 is a new year. Maybe a fix will appear!

The basic problem: progDVB output files do not work with standard VLC, despite the fact that they work in Media Player Classic and many others. You need to either fix the files before you can play them in VLC (with the non-free Videoredo or some similar tool) or play them in VLC via ffmpeg (which has drawbacks in terms of convenience and performance).

You mean my progdvb has recorded the file with an error?
What can i do to repair my error?
As said before, all DVB live recordings contain transmission errors. All of them, even if you have a very good reception quality. You need to repair the streams with either PVAStrumento (for Windows only, might work through Wine on Linux but I've never tried it) or ProjectX (any platform with Java). Some compiled binaries of ProjectX for Windows can be found here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ProjectX

There is also a special feature in PVAStrumento to remove some packets added by ProgDVB. I'm not sure if this behaviour stills exists in ProgDVB as I've stopped using this program many months ago but anyway it's worth a try.

I can't really help you about which settings to use as it depends on too many different factors (country, type of source, quality, etc) and even what could work for one video might not work for another one. So the only way is to test and trial to find out what is working fine for a specific video.

And yes, VLC is very very strict about the format specs (for instance I have some FLAC files that VLC stops playing in the middle but the same files are playing fine in any other player), maybe a bit too much strict but that's another debate :)

vlc --codec ffmpeg will solve your issue.
