Joost Audio

Postby super_spyder » 29 Nov 2008 22:29

Summary for those who don't want to read my ramblings is at the bottom
I searched around on the internet, and cant seem to find the answer so I'll ask you guys. I was on joost.com and they had a music video I cant find anywhere, it had great video and audio quality. In Safari I opened up the activity window (windows>activity window) found the video and downloaded it (it was an mp4). I opened the video up in Quicktime and played it back, the video was fine but the audio was awful. It dropped down to a sample rate of 24000khz hmm odd, but not unheard of for a website to "allow" users to download lower quality files. So out of morbid curiosity I opened the file up in VLC, the audio was great and the media information(codec details) said it was 44100khz so I tried exporting from vlc as h.264 aac 192 audio, the export went fine, and played back in VLC fine, however the problem persisted in Quicktime. The files say that they only have one audio track in VLC. I am at a bit of a loss, I tried it with several videos from joost, and several output settings all with the same result. I also tried to transcode the files with iSquint, and it had the same result. When I tried playing the files back on my PC they played fine in non quicktime programs (no itunes no quicktime), but the exports had the same issue, when played back from a quicktime based program. However exporting causes VLC on windows to crash.

Summary
•downloaded multiple files from joost using safari's activity window
•files download as .mp4, and open in quicktime and VLC
•when played back in quicktime videos have 24000khz sample rate
•when played back in vlc (and MPlayer) videos have a 44100khz sample rate
•videos exported from vlc open in quicktime with 24000khz sample rate regardless of audio transcoding in VLC
•tried transcoding with ffmpeg (via isquint) with same result
•Tried opening/converting the files in windows without a better result.

Any help, insight that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.
