Audio troubles

I am a new user of VLC and am experiencing trouble. I am extracting a clip from a DVD. Extracting is not a problem. The trouble comes when the audio is down right terrible on my new saved file (saved as an Mp4). The audio at first delays and then just disappears. Can anyone give some insight to my problem? Any help would be great. I apologize if this is a common question asked, I couldn't find a topic relevant in the few pages that I searched.
