How to get VLC back to just one window for everything?

Is there an option, buried deep in the preferences window that I just can't seem to find, that will get VLC to play videos in the main window -i.e., so that the pause/play/volume/etc controls are in the same window as the video itself?

I just installed a new Linux distro that uses 0.9.6 and have to say that this two windows business really bugs the hell out of me. It's so xine-like. I hate it.
