I don´t think this is a VLC specific problem but if i rotate my screen (resolution switches from 1920x1200 to 1200x1920) while playback the picture wents black. It´s a rather rare situation, i know, but i like it because you can watch a move on the lower half of the screen and keep working on the upper half. An when i´m finished with the work i´ve to reload the movie...

Your graphic card sucks.
Just deactivate overlay in VLC preferences.
