I downloaded vlc 0.9.0 test 2 and tried out real media video files. They don't seem to be supported. I thought the next vlc would support real media videos since googles summer of code. Have i done something wrong or are they not yet supported.

Either your build does not include real video, or VLC could not find the Real runtime.

the errors and warnings thing says "no suitabe decoder module - VLC does not support the audio or video format RV40. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this"

I'm now using the release 0.9.2 and still I get no real video. I'm using a mac, 10.5 etc. I'm only getting sound, and the sound is good. Any help here, i didn't understand the ddll's etc. Please can someone at VideoLAN team give any help or detailed explanations.

where should we be placing the dlls??

Copy the DLL 'drv43260.dll' to the \VLC\Plugins folder.
Be warned that this feature is unsupported and may give VLC some stability problems.
And also it seems that this trick is working better when using the DirectX 3D output instead of the default Overlay one (more FPS). At least it does on my Radeon 9800 Pro and my Radeon HD 3870, I'm not sure about the other video cards.

When RealMedia will become open source, which is not going to happen soon if you ask me.
RealMedia is a proprietary format, the reason why we have to use some hacks.

RV40 videos are completely non-supported (no free decoder exists for it yet.) Don't use it.

I'm wondering about the RV40 support you mention isn't working?? This I copied from the VLC features page:

"VLC's 0.9.0 release will introduce support for RV30 and RV40 based upon the additions to the FFmpeg-library by one their Google Summer of Code 2007 projects."

Was this a mistake or is there still work to be done to the realmedia support?

It's a mistake in that it is true, but the required changes to VLC to make use of these features were not enabled it seems.

Correction: The reverse engineering is largely finished, but seems to have stalled since october 2007. It is not yet working without crashing (like "all" the time) and thus on purpose not enabled.

FFmpeg can decode RV40, but loop filter isn't done.
VLC can decode RV40 under Windows and Linux, if you use drv4260.dll, IIRC.
