Fast forwarding issues with x264 and VLC player

Whenever I rip a DVD and encode it to x264 with Handbrake, I have a weird issue in VLC player. Whenever I fast forward to a new spot, it's like it has to buffer and takes about 15 seconds to move forward. The picture freezes, but the audio updates. Does anyone else have this problem, and how do I correct it?
