Cannot play .mov file from Minolta Digital Camera

My Minolta Z1 produces .MOV files that are playable in Quicktime on Windows and mplayer on Linux, but I cannot get VLC to play them. VLC opens the file without complaining, but then just does nothing.

I would like to be able to play these files full-screen, and the free version of quicktime will not do it.

What can I do to find out more about the codec used in these files and how I can get VLC to play them?

VLC Reports the following:

Can you open the "Messages..." window _before_ playing your file then send us the complete output ?
