Media Server streaming

Hello, I'm in the process of setting up a media server (running on ubuntu). I plan to store all my videos and music here and want a way for local computers (mostly laptops running on wifi) to be able to access it. I've tried just navigating to the network directory and trying to play the file, which works somewhat. The only problem is that if it's a weak wireless signal, sudden stopping and lag tends to happen. Is there a function in VLC or another program which could serve this purpose?
