I try to play .avi files with th wmv9_vcm codec (yes i have the newest version installed) and all vlc player does is play sound with no video... the video doesn't show at all!
Someone please help.

The upcoming version of VLC will support playback of WMV3 (aka Windows Media 9) under Windows. You can try an unstable nightly build to test that.
